Yoga in Kensington Market
We hijacked a corner in Kensington Market on pedestrian Sunday. A special Sunday too! It was the anniversary of the blackout from few years back, that we all seem to remember fondly. We didn’t cause any trouble, but we did get a lot of attention!
Even the NOW magazine caught up with us!
There was an idea brewing in my head for a while and a week ago on Sunday it manifested itself in a super fun photo-shoot!
Urban Yoga! This was one of the few opportunities to photograph yogis in the middle of the road without getting honked at, run over and into trouble.
Honestly, I would love to photograph people in crazy knots all over the place and hopefully I will get to do so in the future. I was quite amazed by the turnout. Who knew so many other people feel the same way I do? That Yoga has long ago outgrown the stereotype it’s been awarded by western world.
I specifically asked for stylish outfits and left it up to each yogis discretion what they came wearing. I was totally blown away by the character each person displayed in what they chose to wear. And that some didn’t care about the struggle of getting into a difficult pose while wearing tight clothes and high heels impressed me beyond words.
Some people came with several outfits. A different one for each pose they chose.
We got caught in an intense downpour and did I mention it was freaking hot? It was like doing hot yoga class in the middle of the street.
I was loosing track the day of, but as I am looking through the pictures now, I have counted 14 yogis that planed to show up and a few random passers by, who couldn’t resist.
It was a crazy busy afternoon for me and the lovely yoga teachers that came to help me out.
I would love to say THANK YOU! To all who came and made my day in Kensington Market a week ago! Thank you Josie for organizing everyone and helping out in so many ways! Watching the poses and adjusting the yogis so that they could shine in their favorite poses.
Thank you Marinella! My favorite teacher along with Josie for being such a great help and bringing the wine! Yes, we did drink wine on the street! And we did it while doing yoga! Awesome!
And thank you to Jamie for taking these fun behind the scenes shots! Look at me trying to stay up! Haha! Maybe next time! Josie still got a great shot of me in Pigeon.
One thing I have to say was insane was the fact that nobody brought a mat! We all got down and dirty right on the pavement. It was really warm from the Sun, but was it ever filthy! What wouldn’t we do for a picture! Eh?
A lot of passersby stopped to see what we were up to. I think it’s quite amazing if you’ve never been to a yoga class to see how intensely difficult some poses can be. I was hoping for the random stranger to stop and take a picture or stare, I got a lot of those “on film” as we used to say!
These are some of my shots from the day. Wait until you see my favorites!
I have been working on my favorite selects with Josie’s help and can honestly say, the shots are incredible!
So enough with the teasing! I promise I will post those here tomorrow!
We shot some yoga with Josie and Christi-An on a rooftop earlier this Summer, but I want to do more! What do you think? Where should we do it? Anyone got a fun spot?
